just passing like you say there is an isabella from 1897 but the Felling link is pushing me in two different ways. I need to find my dads other siblings certs and try and be 100% sure that I get the right isabella. this is hard work but it will be worth it im sure.

was it really that outlandish for a woman to have a kid in her 50's back then?

Hi Gary, your doing great with your research and with the help of Just Passing and his great links. Genealogy is a crazy thing sometimes just when you think all is going smoothly, a few questions turn up to add confusion .
But what ever you do just stay positive.
As for a woman in her 50s having a child..aahh!! now it still happens even today. Thats when a woman is going through what we call 'Change of Life' she can find that she is adding to the family...lol..In my own family it happend twice...So anything is possible..cheers Cait

Nothing outlandish about it at all
Just not the norm

Anyhow when she died who brought the kids up?

Well my father Stanley was the youngest so being one of 13 kids there must have been a 15-20 year age gap between the oldest and youngest so his siblings brought him up. I have heard stories that there was a male figure in the family but not nessecarly his father. Im intrigued by Isabella and once I know I have the right one I can move on apace. She was the only Isabella born in Felling that came up on the census so it must be her.
My father always said out family story was like a catherine cookson story I think he might be right. anyone know how I get info on 51 Nursery Lane, Felling 1935 as in who lived there or electoral records etc. I wish there more recent census records available.

It's getting confusing now

You say your grandmother Isabella Harrison died 1940 and you found her on the South Tyneside site
Ok
The only one for 1940 on the South Tyneside site is:
Isabella Elizabeth Harrison died Jarrow

Looking on FreeBMD for the same person:
Deaths Dec 1940 Isabella Elizabeth Harrison died Durham N.E. (Jarrow)
AGE 70

66? WHEN YOUR FATHER WAS BORN?

You will have to get your grandmothers death certificate before you go any further

Now you know the correct death certificate will have name at death Isabella Harrison and it will tell you her name at birth was Isabella Gibson

All you need do is phone the register office and ask is the death record for Isabella Harrison nee Isabella Gibson

If not it is the wrong Isabella Harrison ....................

Off FreeBMD
The only one:

Marriages Mar 1920

John Harrison married ***** Gibson Gateshead 10a 1925

My intuition tells me I got it right in the earlier post with this:

Deaths Mar 1939
Harrison Isabella age 43 S.Shields 10a 875

This is on the South Tyneside site:

Death 1939
Isabella HARRISON
Register: 3A
Entry: 121
District: South Shields (2nd)

Isabella Harrison who died in South Shields in the March quarter of 1939 age 43
Making her birth as Isabella Gibson 1895 to 1897 ...............

Births Mar 1897 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gibson Isabella S. Shields 10a 772
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1897 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gibson Isabella Walsall 6b 755
Gibson Isabella Houghton 10a 497
Gibson Isabella Killen S. Shields 10a 823
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Dec 1897 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gibson Isabella Sunderland 10a 631
Gibson Isabella S. Shields 10a 821

So here is what I know now

John Harrison (unkown as yet) Isabella Gibson (Born 1895-1900) Gateshead) Married 1920 Died 1939

Stanley Harrison (Born 1935 Gateshead Died 2005)
Sarah Elizabeth Harrison (Born 1924 Gateshead Died 2010)
Frank Harrison

There are loads of other siblings that I need to find

Im going to start looking now for more evidence of either Isabellas birth as she should be on 1901 or 1911 census as Gibson

Found two Isabella Gibsons from gateshead in 1901 census one born 1898 the other born 1900 interestingly the latters father was a book binder from felling
