The old Gasworkers (forerunner of the Neon) which was on the corner of Gray Street and Grange Road and the Royal Oak (longbar which has never moved) on the corner of Grange Road and Staple Road
Gray Street ran directly into Ferry Street?
And Staple Road dog legged into Commercial Road?
But when they built Monastery Court they had to alter the route of Ferry Street

And lets hope you get your bearings this time round

And what bloke in his right mind would sit in a pub drinking soft drinks when the pubs were jumping in Jarrow then
(so thats fiction)

When the Ex-Servicemens shifted from the corner of Grange Road and Ferry Street to North Street in mid 60s they forgot to exchange there licence - so for a few weeks they opened with no drink till it was sorted
(so you might of got a bit fact mixed with fiction)

In 1974 ish (as I thought) Jack Scott and his wife ran the Royal Oak (Longbar)

The Royal Oak (Longbar) never had wooden surround seats (what we call the 'back seats)
But ......... the Gasworkers (then Mullen's) did have wooden surround seats (what we call the 'back seats) till it closed
So you got wrong place Ted (bit of fact and bit of fiction)

Royal Oak (longbar) today has been on the same corner for 130 years

Where the PHAB (Physically Handicapped and Able Bodied) Club is now, formerly was the crossroads of Gray Street/Grange Road/ Ferry Street
Where the PHAB (Physically Handicapped and Able Bodied) Club is now, formerly was the crossroads of Grange Hotel/Gasworkers/Ex-Servicemen's

The PHAB (Physically Handicapped and Able Bodied) Club shares premises with the Mid Tyne Activities Centre

I bought a couple of glasses with The turf Hotel Jarrow engraved on them.It was the old name of the borough. They're supposed to be from late 1800s.but I have my doubts.

Cait, I can't understand this modern trend of calling the "reception" or cup of tea after a funeral The Wake. Being of Irish decent The Wake was the time family and friends sat up at night with the corpes, before Funeral parlous had their chaple of rest. There was no where else for the body to be but in it's own home. I can tell you it wasn't a very pleasant time to be living in a house like that, don't know about having a good time at the Wake!!! Did any one else experience that? Teeny

One way to find out is hit them with a hammer and if they break in a couple of bits they are original.
If they break into loads of bits they are not.
Do it with both to make doubly sure ...............

Having a cup of tea and calling it a Wake? Whatever next ................
Your right as you say
A Wake was when they celebrated an older persons passing over and waking on the other side
They would never have it for a child
The body was laid out on the bed or open coffin
Food, alchohol, cigarettes (pipe baccy for the pipe smokers) was laid on
Sit round the body telling stories, drinking, singing, playing music till the day of the funeral

The modern equivalent was the body in a open coffin in a cleared room in the house
Which I never found an unpleasant experience
Visitors keep popping in and out the other room, paying their last respects
Sit round in another room with family, friends and neighbours, telling stories, having a few drinks
And when friends and neighbours are gone, the close family keep popping in the other room that has the coffin, throughout the night till the day of the funeral

A lot of people nowadays use a Chapel of Rest
And the body is mostly lying alone throughout the day, and all through the night till the funeral
I find that to be an unpleasant experience

At one time older members of the family prepared the bodies of family or friends (the laying out)
It was just a fact of life
And younger members saw dead members of the family or relations all the time
Which prepared you later to prepare the funeral for a loved one
Nowadays some people can't cope, as they have never been through any learning process
Which after all must come to us all
All I can say is, by my experience the 'old ways are best' ...........

Hi Teeny..I have read over my posts and can't find any reference to me saying 'reception'..sorry unless I have missed something...
What I had done was posted a reply for another member that was when I had mentioned 'Wake'...
As it is I am old enough to know what a 'Wake' is, and many of my own Kin on their passing were brought home. Truly a very emotional time for all...
As told by some of my Elders, during the time prior to the Funeral, and afterwards friends and family would celebrate the persons life in many cases raising a glass or two.
Sharing memories and happy stories of the one who had passed away. Yes it was mostly a sad time but not always as folk did share good times of days past. Cait

Cait, didn't mean to upset you, it was just a general coment to all, asking where the idea that the "reception" after a funeral started to be called "a wake". Didn't say you called it that, I call it a "reception" as the wake is before the funeral. Sooorrrryyyyyy!!!! Teeny
