Yes good old Councillor Violet Hope
That was back in the days when Councillors done the job for the glory and not for payment

Theres an old story about Violet that has went down in local folklore

At a Council meeting in her later years she commented on why the gaslighters where not doing their jobs of going round on a bicycle carrying a ladder and lighting the street lights?

The full council were stunned into silence, then quickly moved on ........

Note: The streets lights had all been converted to electric many years before ..........................

That's almost as good as the one about Paddy Scullion asking why the Council was only building urinals; shouldn't they put up some arsenals as well?

Totally apocryphal I'm sure, but a a good laugh.

I shouldn't really be posting this because I don't know the full facts relating to the incident, but back in the 60's when I first went to work in ducks park, Ned Dudgeon, the parks deputy superintendent at the time told me a story about the time they tried to get a pagoda for the pond.
some councillor in his wisdom said "Why not get two and breed them".

Brilliant! Can't beat Geordie humour. Similarly when Mr Hare was announcing the leek show prizes in The Neon many years ago, he announced the first prize was a Diving Suit until someone corrected him. "My apologies" he said "That should have been a divan suite".
